![]() The HD Texture Pack for the 3DS version was never finished and appears to use a relatively simple upscale. DQ8MR also uses the 2015 compositions, but doesn't have the same quality loss since the samples are directly from the symphonic suite with minimal compression. 3DS (in JP and the orchestral mod which pulls from the JP release) uses the 2016 orchestral compositions (in short: they sound a bit better with less reverb, slightly more up-tempo in some spots, etc), however like what happened with the voiceovers, 3DS compresses them as BCSTM / DSPADPCM, so there is a small amount of quality loss due to the compression (something that isn't terrible on the 3DS's tinny speakers, but elsewhere it's more noticeable). So you have the original outfits on both of those as it is.įor orchestral music, it's a bit of an interesting situation: PS2 (international release, which most folks use) uses the 2004 orchestral compositions. Obviously, the PS2 and Mobile versions never needed a de-censor mod (removal of censorship) that the 3DS version had. PS2 Version has a 4k texture pack by 1vierock and a 4k UI pack by HuffleScuf. I'll give a brief overview of the ones I am aware of.ģDS Version has a modest HD retexture, an orchestral mod, and a de-censor mod. Of course, there exist mods for all of them (DQ8MR being a massive overhaul of the mobile version in itself). DQ8MR: Most accessible, & a "middle ground" between the two. PS2 Version: Best graphics and presentation. ![]() If you're looking for a way to play (or re-play) DQ8 right now, here is how I would classify the options based on what criteria is important to you: That's not to say I don't hope for a new release/remaster someday (and I do!), but I also don't think it's happening any time soon based on the current release roadmap for the series. When one does come, there will still be folks saying they prefer "XYZ" version. Even with some of the best "remasters" out there- for almost any popular game, there are many people (with very valid reasons!) that continue to play the older releases. To some degree, I think there's some unhealthy obsession with wanting one perfect "definitive" version of a title that completely devalues every prior version. I *did* set out to improve the mobile port and make it a much more satisfying experience in line with the PS2 classic, and the 3DS enhanced port. Nor did I set out to create a "definitive" version. ![]() There is no "definitive" version of DQVIII, period. (Click any image below to see full-size version) I'll wrap this post up by adding some comparison images and a few remarks: This includes things like Location IDs, Character IDs, Enemy IDs, Item IDs, how item data is stored and accessed, how status effects are stored and accessed, etc. Quite a bit of this also applies to the PS2 and 3DS versions of the game. You can pretty much find all of my notes and documentation posted in the DQ Modding Community Discord linked on the main post. This mod was a lot of work and required a quite a bit of learning on-the-fly with most things being completely undocumented. That's drawn a lot of eyes and i'm grateful when folks feel compelled to say good things about it (even when a lot of others are absolutely not going to be receptive). Most people seem to have a really good time with the DQ8 Mobile Remaster Mod, and I want to thank HeRinger for posting a thread to ResetEra praising the mod.
